Fairtrade Fortnight 2015

We’re big fans of Fairtrade Fortnight here at Just Fair Trade! It gives us a great opportunity to boost our day-to-day commitment to fair trade with some fun events, promotions and activities. We also love the opportunity it gives us to both support the bigger picture work of the Fairtrade Foundation and enable local groups to engage with the challenge of promoting fair trade.

So what’s going on this year?

The Fairtrade Foundation have launched a ‘back-to-basics’ campaign focusing on tea, sugar and cocoa with the aim of highlighting the fact that while a huge 78% of the UK public now recognise the FAIRTRADE Mark, only a tiny proportion of goods are traded on Fairtrade terms on the global commodities market.

In keeping with this, here at Just Fair Trade we’ll be focusing on food during Fairtrade Fortnight! Regular (and not-so-regular) customers will know that for several years food has been upstairs in the shop, but yesterday we spent the day moving all our food stock – chocolate, rice, honey, tea, spices, biscuits, all of it! – downstairs! We’re hoping to have plenty of tasting opportunities over the two weeks of Fairtrade Fortnight so make sure you pop in and don’t miss out!

But there are also plenty of other things going on…

There’s a Fairtrade Trail through Leicester city that you can follow between now and Saturday 7 March – find out more via the link and then pick up your map from Just Fair Trade! It’s a great way to explore the city and find out more about fair trade all at the same time!

On Wednesday 25 February, 6-8.30pm, Just Fair Trade is hosting The Big Brew, a tea and cake evening in support of Traidcraft’s match funding opportunity – whatever we raise for Traidcraft will be doubled by UKaid which will make a huge difference to communities in some of the poorest parts of the world. We’ll also be watching Fair Trade Matters, the Fairtrade Foundation’s short film about tea growers in Malawi. And there’ll be vast quantities of cake and tea to eat and drink! Tickets are £2 – book your place by emailing justshop@hotmail.co.uk, giving us a ring on 0116 253 8032 or popping into the shop.

On Saturday 28 February, 11am-3pm, St Martin’s Square is hosting a whole variety of activities to support and raise the profile of fair trade. It’s been organised by Just Fair Trade in partnership with the city council and various other local fair trade supporters. Fun for all the family – no need to book!

We have another partnership up our sleeves – keep your eyes peeled for a pretty special Fairtrade Fortnight announcement…!

And finally, are you part of a faith, school or local community group? Have you ever thought about ways in which you could promote fair trade within that group? Why not consider hosting your own fair trade stall during Fairtrade Fortnight? We provide a sale-or-return service that enables groups to sell fair trade products without the financial risk involved in buying in products themselves. If you’d like to know more, drop us an email to justshop@hotmail.co.uk, give us a ring on 0116 253 8032 or pop into the shop to find out more.

Happy Fairtrade Fortnight!
