Rotavator for Howard in Malawi!

Posted on

We’ve just received this picture of Howard with the new rotavator in Malawi. This time last year Howard visited Leicester from a smallholder farmers association in Northern Malawi. Howard is a farmer growing rice as a cash crop on his small farm. He told a packed audience in our shop in Leicester about the transformation he has seen in his community since they started selling their rice under fair trade terms to people like us here! He also visited Avenue Primary School inspiring them to sell lots of his rice and also to raise money for a much needed rotavator. You can read more about Howard’s story from our blog post last July and what Avenue Primary school got up to with rice in our blog post from last November. We joined forces with the school in raising money for the rotator with staff, volunteers and customers putting their loose change into a plant pot on the till. So thank you everyone, now Howard and all the farmers in his co-op can can use the rotavator to turn the soil making their job just a little bit easier.
